The rain clouds swelled in the sky but Alvie tried to stay positive about what appeared to be a building storm. Summer was when his baseball team was in full swing. June brought the promise of longer days. That year, they were frequently made shorter by the constant arrival of rain. His entire family wondered why there was constant rain during those summer months.
The sundial marked the middle of the day. It was hot, hazy and cloudy that day in June 1900.
It was the end of June. Alvie's sister Sarah and his mother had spent the weekend before baking apple pies. Green apple pie was waiting for Alvie and his friends after the game was over. His sports shoes slid into the edge of the table that was covered with a sheet of cotton. Gazing towards the birdbath, Alvie noticed that a cardinal had made its' nest in a branch that hung over the table.
